How to Remove Coffee Stains from Carpet
Morning coffee mishaps are one of the most common carpet stains we encounter. The good news? Coffee stains are very treatable, especially when addressed quickly. Here's our professional guide to getting coffee out of your carpet.
☕ Coffee with Cream?
Coffee with milk or cream requires enzyme cleaner in addition to regular cleaning, as dairy leaves protein stains. Black coffee is easier to remove!
Remove Fresh Coffee Stains
Step 1: Blot Immediately
Use clean white cloths or paper towels to blot up as much coffee as possible. Work from the outside in to prevent spreading. Keep blotting with fresh cloths until no more coffee transfers.
Step 2: Rinse with Cold Water
Pour a small amount of cold water on the stain and blot again. This dilutes the remaining coffee and lifts more of the stain.
Step 3: Apply Cleaning Solution
Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap + 1 tablespoon of white vinegar + 2 cups of warm water. Apply to the stain with a clean cloth, working from outside to center.
Step 4: Blot and Repeat
Blot with a dry cloth. Repeat the cleaning solution and blotting until the stain is gone.
Step 5: Final Rinse
Rinse with cold water and blot dry. Place a thick towel over the area and weigh it down to absorb remaining moisture.
Remove Dried Coffee Stains
Dried coffee requires a bit more effort:
- Wet the stain – Apply warm water to rehydrate the dried coffee
- Apply dish soap – Put a few drops directly on the stain
- Gently scrub – Use a soft brush in circular motions
- Let it sit – Wait 5-10 minutes
- Blot and rinse – Blot up the solution and rinse with cold water
- Repeat if needed – Stubborn stains may need 2-3 treatments
Alternative Methods
Baking Soda Method
For fresh stains: After blotting, sprinkle baking soda over the damp area. Let it sit for 30 minutes to absorb remaining coffee, then vacuum thoroughly.
Hydrogen Peroxide (for light carpets only)
Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water. Test in a hidden area first! Apply to the stain, wait 10 minutes, then blot and rinse. Do not use on dark carpets – it may bleach the color.
