How to Get Dog Pee Smell Out of Carpet

We love our furry friends, but accidents happen. Whether you're house training a puppy or caring for an older dog, dealing with dog urine in carpet is frustrating – especially when the smell just won't go away. Here's our professional guide to eliminating dog pee odor for good.

Why Does Dog Urine Smell Linger?

Dog urine contains uric acid crystals that bind to carpet fibers. Regular cleaning products only mask the odor temporarily. When humidity rises, those crystals reactivate and the smell returns. That's why you might notice the smell comes back on humid days or after steam cleaning with the wrong products.

🔍 Finding Hidden Urine Spots

Use a UV black light in a dark room to find old urine stains. They'll glow yellow-green. Mark the spots before you start cleaning.

Step-by-Step: Remove Dog Pee Smell from Carpet

For Fresh Accidents (Still Wet)

Step 1: Blot Immediately

Use paper towels or a clean cloth to absorb as much urine as possible. Stand on the towels to press deep into the carpet. Replace towels until no more moisture transfers.

Step 2: Rinse with Cool Water

Pour cool water on the spot to dilute remaining urine. Blot again to absorb.

Step 3: Apply Enzyme Cleaner

Use an enzymatic pet cleaner (like Nature's Miracle or Rocco & Roxie). These contain bacteria that actually eat the uric acid crystals. Saturate the area completely – you need to reach as deep as the urine did.

Step 4: Let It Work

Cover with a damp cloth and let sit for 10-15 minutes (or as directed). Don't rush this step!

Step 5: Blot and Air Dry

Blot up excess cleaner and allow to air dry completely. You can place a fan nearby to speed drying.

For Old, Set-In Urine Stains

Dried urine is harder to remove. The uric acid has had time to crystallize and bond with carpet fibers. Here's what to try:

  1. Saturate the area with an enzyme cleaner – use more than you think you need
  2. Cover with plastic wrap to keep the area moist
  3. Let it sit for 24-48 hours
  4. Remove plastic, blot, and allow to dry
  5. If smell persists, repeat the process

⚠️ What NOT to Use

  • Steam cleaners (without enzyme pre-treatment) – Heat can permanently set the stain and odor
  • Ammonia-based cleaners – Ammonia smells like urine to dogs and encourages re-marking
  • Vinegar alone – It doesn't break down uric acid crystals

The Baking Soda Method

After enzyme treatment, you can use baking soda for extra odor absorption:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the dried area
  2. Let sit overnight (or at least 8 hours)
  3. Vacuum thoroughly

When to Call a Professional

Sometimes DIY methods aren't enough. Consider professional pet odor removal if:

Professional carpet cleaners have specialized equipment and commercial-grade enzyme treatments that can reach deep into carpet padding and subfloor where urine often penetrates.
