How to Remove Blood Stains from Carpet

Blood stains can happen from minor cuts, nosebleeds, or pet injuries. While they look alarming, blood stains are actually removable if you act quickly and use the right techniques. Here's our professional guide to removing blood from carpet.

🚨 Critical Rule: COLD Water Only!

Never use hot or warm water on blood stains. Heat causes the proteins in blood to coagulate and bond permanently to carpet fibers. Always use COLD water.

Remove Fresh Blood Stains

Step 1: Blot with Cold Water

Wet a clean white cloth with cold water. Blot the stain gently – don't rub! Work from the outside edges toward the center to prevent spreading.

Step 2: Apply Dish Soap Solution

Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 2 cups of cold water. Apply to the stain with a clean cloth and blot gently. The surfactants in dish soap help lift the blood.

Step 3: Rinse and Repeat

Blot with a cloth dampened with plain cold water to rinse. Repeat the soap solution and rinsing until the stain lifts.

Step 4: Dry Thoroughly

Blot with dry towels and allow to air dry. You can place a fan nearby to speed drying.

Remove Dried Blood Stains

Dried blood is more challenging but not impossible:

  1. Scrape off dried blood – Use a dull knife to gently scrape away any dried surface blood
  2. Rehydrate the stain – Apply cold water and let it soak for 10-15 minutes
  3. Use enzyme cleaner – Apply an enzyme-based cleaner (designed for protein stains). These break down the blood proteins.
  4. Let it work – Allow 15-30 minutes for the enzymes to work
  5. Blot and rinse – Blot up the solution and rinse with cold water
  6. Repeat if needed – Stubborn dried stains may need multiple treatments

Alternative Methods

Salt Paste Method

Mix salt with enough cold water to make a paste. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then blot and rinse. Salt helps draw out the blood.

Hydrogen Peroxide (Light Carpets Only)

For light-colored carpets only: Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. It will bubble as it breaks down the blood. Blot and rinse with cold water. Warning: Test in a hidden area first – peroxide can bleach colored carpets!

💡 Pro Tip: Meat Tenderizer

Unseasoned meat tenderizer contains enzymes that break down protein. Mix with cold water to make a paste, apply to the stain for 30 minutes, then rinse. It works surprisingly well!
